While the images allow increasing passages of time between events and the photographs that reflect on them – “made moments after the events they depict, then those made days after, then months, years and so on” – there settles in the pit of the stomach some unremitting melancholy, some unholy dread as to the brutal facticity and inhumanness of war. Conflict, Time, Photography brings together photographers who have looked back at moments of conflict, from the seconds after a bomb is detonated to 100 years after a war has ended. Staged to coincide with the centenary of the First World War, this major group exhibition offers an alternative to familiar notions of war reportage and photojournalism, instead focusing on the passing of time and the unique ways that artists have used the camera to reflect on past events.
The first featured a ruined castle that was blown up intentionally by the Japanese army during the Second World War. The second comprised photographs taken a decade after the atomic bomb exploded in Hiroshima. They showed the stains and flaking ceilings of the Atomic Bomb Dome, the only structure left standing at the heart of the detonation zone. The third part concerned Tokyo during the period of economic recovery: images of advertising, scrap iron, the trampled national flag and emblems of the American Forces such as Lucky Strike and Coca-Cola, all twisted together, their order shuffled again and again. Some appeared as a montage to be presented as a metaphor. I dare not say the meaning of it.

The 1925 painting The House By the Railroad, portraying the changing America with old houses left out of context with the advent of railroads, is picked up by Hitchcock. The old House, waiting to be explored by the railroad, then becomes the landscape for the horror to unfold.

The jaguar is parked by a small petrol station. An elegantly dressed tall and handsome man leans beside the car with a pair of binoculars. What he is looking at is left to our imagination. Is he scouting a location as part of some task he has been set as a dastardly spy? Is he merely trying to ascertain his next move on his journey, surveying the route ahead? The sign on the pump reads Fast Service. Is this a metaphor for the man and his car?The ocean is magnificent in the background and if we look closely we can see a boat liner in the distance. This is always a strong memory of anyone who has spent time by the beach, of the large boats that slowly sail in the distance from morning to night.
This 1986 classic provides quite a different museum scene. During their self-inaugurated day off, Ferris, Cameron and Sloane head to the Art Institute of Chicago. Across a few shots, the museum’s extensive collection is seen on screen. Soon, the characters themselves become art-like, posing in perfect alignment with the rules of perspective.
In this cult classic, Eva Green and Louis Garrel form an unforgettable pair that profoundly impact an American expat’s experience of Paris. The adventurous duo, never ceasing to incorporate art and culture into their rebellion, decide to recreate a scene from Godard’s famous Band of Outsiders. The movie thus successfully references two different art genres at once, with a nod to New Wave cinema and art history’s neo-classical masterpieces.

The Perlman family approaches art as they do food, music or literature: with extreme awe and pleasure.
